The New House!
The New House!

For the past few months we’ve been trying to move out of this dilapidated bldg my landlord calls a house. I won’t even go into details about what all is wrong with it b/c it’ll only gross you out. Suffice it to say that I will be calling the Health Department early in December.

Earlier this month Alex and I drove around town looking for rentals and stumbled upon a cute little house on a quiet little street. Patience has never been one of my strengths, but I prayed for it and God granted it to me and (as always) it paid off.

Manny and I got to do a walk-through of the house last night and I absolutely love it. The house was built in 1950 so it’s got that old school charm that reminds me of my Grandma’s old house.

It has REAL hardwood floors that we’ll be repainting, plus all the walls and cabinets will be repainted. The landlord is replacing the toilet, the kitchen counter, the front steps and banister, and is going to install collapsible stairs to the attic (b/c we asked).

Going up the steps onto the porch (there’s even a swing there), the front doors open into the living room. Beyond that is the dining computer/media room, and a BIG kitchen. Okay, the kitchen probably isn’t that big by some standards, but for us it’s huge and was a major selling point. There’s no pantry or dishwasher but a very long counter (soon to be replaced) and a lot of cabinets. We see it as a time to get back to the basics for quality family time (who wants to dry?) and an opportunity to get into the habit of weekly grocery shopping. It also means that we can’t have a lot of kitchen junk that we don’t actually use. Beyond the kitchen is a closed in porch where the washer/dryer (and the kitty box) will go, and then the back doors into the yard. Towards the right off the living room, are the boys’ bedrooms (TBD which is which), the bathroom (complete with cabinet for clean towels and dirty clothes), and the master bedroom (with a HUGE walk-in closet).

It’s the not the greatest of houses in the general scheme of things, but it’s a huge step up from where we’re at (which was a huge step up from our previous apartment), it’s bigger than what we have now, and it’ll force us to change our habits for the better.

It’s going to be crazy this week trying to get everything sorted through and packed up in order to move Saturday, but we’ve already rented a U-Haul truck and a dolly and we’ll manage.
